1959 - NASA selects first US astronauts.
On this day in 1959 NASA announced the selection of the first seven US
astronauts.
These astronauts were selected for the Mercury program to test if
humans could survive in space.
Mercury astronauts had to be male, less than 40
years old and not more than 5'11" tall, less than 180 lbs. and in excellent
physical condition.
The seven astronauts selected were: Scott Carpenter, Gordon
Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton.
